Deep Tow 2000
Combined Seabed Survey Package

GeoAcoustics Deep Tow 2000The GeoAcoustics Deep Tow 2000 provides a flexible suite of seabed survey tools to suit customers’ requirements. The modular system can include any combination of data from dual frequency side scan sonar, chirp or conventional profiler, magnetometer, towfish tracking and towfish pitch, roll, heading and depth, all rated to a working depth of 3000 metres. The towfish components can be mounted onto a Model 136 towfish.

At the heart of the system is the Telemetry Interface Unit, which allows power, signal, and control for all towfish systems to be multiplexed down a single co-axial cable. Data storage, processing and control are provided by a wide range of sonar processing systems, or can be adapted to allow these functions to be carried out by your existing processing system.

Telemetry System

The Deep Tow 2000 Telemetry System allows users to operate the system over a single co-axial cable. It has been developed from the well proven telemetry system used on the GeoAcoustics Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar.

At the surface the Telemetry Interface Unit (Model TL2001) provides power and trigger signals to the towfish sub-systems and de-multiplexes the sensor data from the towfish. On the towfish the Telemetry Subsea Unit (Model TL2002) provides power and a trigger source for the subsea systems as well as multiplexing their data and transmitting it to the surface.

Cable life is extended by the Telemetry System’s high tolerance of cable leakage, which helps to keep the through-life-costs of the Deep Tow 2000 system to an absolute minimum.

Telemetry System features include:

  • Power, signal, and control multiplexed down a single co-axial cable.
  • Designed to work over a 10 km long by 11 mm diameter cable.
  • Highly tolerant of cable leakage.

Sub-bottom Profiling

GeoChirp II, the new generation sub-bottom profiler from GeoAcoustics, offers a performance to price ratio that is second to none. GeoChirp II uses advanced frequency modulation (FM) and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques giving users the means to optimise seabed penetration and record resolution over the 1 kHz to 12 kHz frequency range. At the surface the GeoChirp Transceiver (Model CP931) is used to control the repetition rate and select the output waveform.  Towfish components are the GeoChirp II Electronics Model (CP2002), the GeoChirp Hydrophone (Model CP937), and up to 4 Model 138C Transducers.

GeoChirp II can be configured as a chirp or conventional pinger profiler. The efficient design and small size of the GeoChirp II towfish components makes them ideal for mounting on an ROV or AUV. Key features of GeoChirp II include:

  • Multiplexed chirp or conventional profiler.
  • Programmable output waveform.
  • Variable power output up to 2kW.
  • Frequency range 1kHz to 12kHz.

Towfish Attitude Package

The Towfish Attitude Package (Model TL2003) monitors the following parameters:

  • Towfish heading
  • Pitch and roll
  • Depth

Side Scan Sonar

The GeoAcoustics Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar system is the ideal tool for seabed feature mapping, offering flexibility and high quality results in a simple and reliable package. The side scan sub-system includes the following:

  • Side Scan Transceiver (Model SS981).
  • Towfish components are the Side Scan Multiplexer (Model SS982) and Two Dual Frequency Transducers (Model 196D/Port and Starboard).

The operating frequency can also be switched from 114kHz to 410kHz directly from the Transceiver. The choice of frequencies means that long range scanning and short range high resolution investigations are both possible.

The versatility, ease of operation and cost effectiveness of the GeoAcoustics Dual Frequency Side Scan Sonar has made it a popular choice with commercial survey companies.

Thermal Printer

The GeoPrinter (Model 9315CTP-975) has been designed as a successor to the Alden 9315CTP-975, which has proven to be an excellent recorder, ideal for use with GeoAcoustics seabed survey systems. The GeoPrinter offers high reliability and competitive pricing previously only available with the Alden printer.

The GeoPrinter, Continuous Tone Thermal Printer, (Model 9315CTP-975), is a general, all-purpose image printer that provides fast, high quality photographic images. Images are recorded on a choice of thermal fibre, plastic or transparent plastic film. The printed images are 25.6 cm (10.1 inches) in width by any length up to 45.7 m (150 ft) and feature 256 shades of grey per pixel and a resolution of 2048 pixels per line.

Magnetometer

The Deep Tow 2000 system interfaces to the Geometrics G880 and G881 magnetometers and Marine Magnetics SeaSPY Magnetometer.  The flexible nature of the Deep Tow 2000 Telemetry System also allows for the interfacing of other makes of magnetometer.

Towfish Tracking

A Posidonia ultra-short baseline (USBL) responder can be fitted to the Deep Tow 2000 towfish, with power and the trigger signal to the responder being provided by the Telemetry Subsea Unit. The Posidonia USBL system has a range of up to 8000 metres.

Model 136 Towfish

The complete Deep Tow 2000 system, including all optional packages, can be deployed on the field-proven GeoAcoustics Stainless Steel Towfish (Model 136SS).
